British boy sneaks onto Rome flight without passport
Britain's Manchester Airport launched an urgent investigation Wednesday after an 11-year-old boy managed to slip through security and fly to Rome without a passport or ticket.
Liam Corcoran walked through security checks without showing any documentation and successfully boarded a Jet2.com flight to the Italian capital on Tuesday, the airport in north-west England admitted.
He was scanned by security staff but they did not notice his lack of a passport and boarding pass as he mingled with a family boarding the plane, the Manchester Evening News reported.
Passengers noticed halfway through the flight that the boy was alone and alerted the cabin crew.
"This extremely serious matter is now being urgently investigated by officials from the airport and airline," an airport spokesman said."It is clear that documentation has not been checked correctly at security and the boarding gate. The boy went through full security screening so the safety of passengers and the aircraft was never compromised."
Several staff from Manchester Airport and Jet2.com have been suspended while the investigation takes place.
The incident comes as some two million people head to Britain for the Olympic Games, which open in London on Friday.
Security at the Games has been under the spotlight after Britain was forced to deploy an extra 4,700 troops to guard venues following a recruitment meltdown at a private security contractor.
An airport spokesman said Liam stayed onboard the plane after it landed at Rome Fiumicino Airport and returned on the same plane to Manchester, where he was met by his mother.
The Manchester Evening News said he had run away from his mother during a shopping trip at the city's Wythenshawe Civic Centre and travelled to the airport on his own.

5 ways to keep kids busy during a flight delay or layover
Courtesy of Aeroports de Paris
Some airports, such as Paris-Orly, provide spaces for kids to burn off energy before boarding a plane.
Being stuck in the boarding area with kids in tow can be challenging: You’re exhausted after the schlep through security, and you don’t want to run through your kids’ in-flight entertainment before you leave the ground.
Here are some ideas for keeping your children entertained if you have a flight delay or long layover.
- Stock up: This is the time to buy snacks and milk (which is not stocked on many domestic airlines) for the flight.
- Get your jiggles out: Find a quiet gate area and encourage your kids to play jumping games (for example, who can jump the most times in one minute) and relay races. You might get a few wide-eyed looks, but wouldn’t you prefer to get them here than at cruising altitude?
- Go on a scavenger hunt: Even if you are in an unfamiliar airport, it doesn’t take too much effort to dream up a scavenger hunt that would send you and your kids on a fun adventure. In London, for example, you might ask them to find a toy London bus, a picture of the queen, and a “W.C.”
- Ask for information: More and more airports have playgrounds or interesting art displays that kids would enjoy. Some have activity books to give to young visitors. The best way to find out is at the airport’s information desk.
- Use the bathroom: I know more than one parent whose fully potty trained child has refused to use the airplane bathroom (and really, who can blame them?). The best way to avoid an in-flight accident is to make everyone visit the restroom before you fly.

FARE DISPARITY, NIGERIA AND GHANA - IT'S TIME FOR ANSWERS
Until recently, that's about a week ago, I thought no one knew there was any disparity in fares charged on some airlines from Nigeria as against Ghana. This view was however laid to rest when the honourable house in Nigeria started a debate on it. Honestly, I do not know if the responsibility of talking about this issue is theirs but I agree it's time we ask questions and get answers. I have made a compilation of some fares on the two routes and I leave you to spot the difference, it's not so difficult to spot though.
BRITISH AIRWAYS
LAGOS - LONDON - LAGOS ACCRA - LONDON - ACCRA

D CLASS 715,469/884,182 480,731/650,387

J CLASS 989,199/1,171,598 655,556/833,952
It is however instructive to note that the economy fares of these airlines are the same from both Lagos and Accra. This therefore makes one wonder if these exorbitant fares charged on the higher classes (premium economy to first class) is not as a result of the fact that they believe Nigeria has more (free) money than Ghana.
Whatever their reason(s) though, it's time to get some answers, they owe us that much.

WILL ONE PIECE DO IT?
Have you heard? You might not be able to carry more than one piece of 23kg on your next flight out of Nigeria? This I bet is news to most people but courtesy airlines like Virgin Atlantic, you might have to reconsider what to take with you on your next flight.
I have tried to think of why any airline should make any decision like this especially on a Nigerian route and I have easily come to my answer, the need to make more money. A lot of Nigerians reading this piece will probably say "serves them right, they really can pack rubbish you know". This sort of line is what kept me thinking and asking, why wont a piece of 23kg do it for most Nigerian travellers? This is simple, most Nigerians are family visitors. If you look at the percentage of people travelling abroad in Nigeria, I'll safely say that 90% of them are family travellers, you don't go visiting families and not bring souveniers do you. Anyway, I think the time when we will begin to appraise our choice of things to pack and not to pack is right here.

SA DEPORTATION OF NIGERIANS - IF THE TRUTH BE TOLD
When it was reported that South Africa deported over one hundred Nigerians last week there was so much out cry against the decision of the South African government. A lot as been said about this issue but I want to comment as a travel consultant based in Nigeria.
It is a known fact that South Africa requests for yellow fever vaccination card from Nigerians travelling to their country. This has gone on for so long that I do not understand what the uproar is about. In my opinion, the issue is not about whether it is right or wrong for SA to make whatever request they desire of Nigerians, it is rather about the way Nigerians flout every known orders given to them. To get a yellow fever vaccination card in Nigeria, you only have to go to the airport on a day that there is a Johannesburg bound flight. This I feel is wrong and criminal but since we've done it for so long without any repercussion(s), we have all collectively assumed it is right.
If it is "wrong" for SA to make this request of us, I wonder why it took our government and all her officials, who have been granting interviews all around, the deportation of over a hundred people for them to notice it is wrong, perhaps they buy their own yellow fever vaccination card at the airport also.
I am not in any way saying what SA did to Nigerians is right but I think morally, we have failed as much as they have failed, if not more.
If you must enter USA, no matter your nationality if your country is visa free, you fill the ESTA form, simple, that's their rule, you either abide by it or you get turned back.
LESSON: To my readers and clients alike, it is necessary that you have correct and genuine documentation(s) for any country you are travelling to as the fact that you have your visa does not give you automatic entry into that country. lol
